For many families, a phone call to social services is their first introduction to the sometimes bewildering network of programs and services for seniors. Our information and referral specialist can answer questions about elder care, suggest solutions, mail information and make referrals when appropriate. We have the most current information on services for seniors. Our information and referral specialist will follow up to find out if further assistance is needed. Friendly Visitor

Friendly Visitor volunteers provide companionship, understanding, and empathy to elders who are lonely and/or isolated. Through regular visits, these volunteers help the client remain as independent as possible while living in the community. |

Telephone Reassurance |
|
| |
The Telephone Reassurance Program is a calling service to seniors who are homebound or shut-in. Telephone reassurance is an ideal program for those convalescing and/or wishing to remain in contact with a “friendly voice.” |

Homemaker/Handyman
|
|
| |
This program provides homemaker and/or handyman referrals to seniors who are in need of assistance in their homes. Seniors providing services as well as those seeking to hire homemaker or repair man are registered in the social services office. |

Free Tax Assistance
|

| |
From February through April 15th, trained AARP volunteers will help low and middle income persons, with special attention given to persons age 60 and older, prepare their income tax returns. Tax preparers will do the following: wages, interest, dividends, stock sales, sale of house, pensions, IRA’s, annuities, social security calculations and low income self employment. They do not do rentals, business/high income self employment, mutual funds, foreign investments or partnerships. This service is only offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

YMCA Senior Nutrition Program
|

Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. the Carson/Torrance YMCA serves a delicious, healthy, hot and nutritious lunch in the Carson Community Center. Eligibilty is extended to anyone 60 years and older, plus a spouse of any age. Come enjoy a tasty meal, as well as warm conversations and fellowship. There is a suggested donation of $2.50 per meal, but costs for home delivered meals can be arranged. Call (310) 505-5253 for reservations and cancellations by 11:30 a.m. the day before.
